We visited Red Wiggler Community Farm on a beautiful, early summer day. Cool weather crops like beets, kohlrabi, lettuce and chard were being picked by their main growers, interns and volunteers. They're located on the Montgomery County Maryland Agricultural Reserve, which is 70,000 acres just outside of Washington DC preserved for farming. Their mission and reason for being is to provide meaningful and inclusive jobs for adults with developmental disabilities as well as educational opportunities for youth and college students. Since 1996, they have been providing jobs and delicious food for the DC area using a sustainable business plan. Since they focus heavily on providing a social service, their funding model is a unique one, with a percentage coming from sales of their produce, but also through grants and contributions. We had a great time hanging out for the day to meet folks and are looking forward to visiting again soon.Check them out in Clarksburg, MD and http://RedWiggler.org
